The boy who was wild for books – Bradbury’s update to Fahrenheit 451

Nobody inspires my passion for libraries, books and writing quite like Ray Bradbury. I’ll often read a chapter from his Zen in The Art of Writing with my first cup of coffee. His passion is an extra jolt of caffeine, kickstarting my morning writing session.

This morning he was talking about revisiting his Fahrenheit 451 characters over 20 years after publishing the book. The following passage is not in the original book, but from a stage play he wrote in the late 70s. Few writers have the ability to plumb the depths of human nature like Bradbury and I was inspired to share this passage.

Exploring the darkness of Beatty’s soul, Bradbury exposes the madness of a man embittered with life, ‘a failed Romantic’ who turned from a boy ‘wild for books’ into a man who burned them for a living.

“I called all my characters from F. 451 out of the shadows. What’s new, I said to Montag, Clarisse, Faber, Beatty, since last we met in 1953? In what secret ways have you grown? What can you tell me that you didn’t tell back in 1950 and 1953? We have all grown old together, the dreamer and the dreamed. Step forward now, and within the framework of the novel as it was, dare to tell me some new things about your most secret thoughts, both frightening and beautiful.

“One of my characters stepped forward and spoke. I listened and wrote.”

Guy Montag, hero of F. 451, asks Fire Chief Beatty how he became a burner of books. To answer the question Beatty takes Montag to his apartment where Beatty has thousands of books lining the walls of his hidden library.

“But you’re the Chief Burner! You can’t have books on your premises!” cries Montag.
Beatty replies, “It’s not owning the books that’s a crime Montag. It’s reading them!”
Montag, in shock, awaits Beatty’s explanation.

“Don’t you see the beauty, Montag? I never read them. Not one book, not one chapter, not one page, not one paragraph. I do play with ironies, don’t I? To have thousands of books and never crack one, to turn your back on the lot and say: No. It’s like having a house full of beautiful women and, smiling, not touching . . . one. So, you see, I’m not a criminal at all. If you ever catch me reading one, yes, then turn me in! But this place is a pure as a twelve-year-old virgin girl’s white-cream summer night bedroom. These books die on the shelves. Why? Because I say so. I do not give them sustenance, no hope with hand or eye or tongue. They are no better than dust.”

Montag protests. “I don’t see how you can’t be—”

“Tempted?” cries the Fire Chief. “Oh, that was long ago. The apple is eaten and gone. The snake has returned to its tree. The garden has grown to weed and rust.”

“Once—“Montag hesitates, then continues, “Once you must have loved books very much.”

“Touché!” the Fire Chief responds. “Below the belt. On the chin. Through the heart. Ripping the gut. Oh, look at me, Montag. The man who loved books, no, the boy who was wild for them, insane for them, who climbed the stacks like a chimpanzee gone made for them.

“I ate them like salad, books were my sandwich for lunch, my tiffin and dinner and midnight munch. I tore out pages, ate them with salt, doused them with relish, gnawed on the bindings, turned the chapters with my tongue! Books by the dozens, the score and the billion. I carried so many home I was hunchbacked for years. Philosophy, art history, politics, social science, the poem, the essay, the grandiose play, you name ‘em. I ate ‘em. And then . . . and then . . .” The Fire Chief’s voice fades.

Montag prompts: “And then?”

“Why, life happened to me.” The Fire Chief shuts his eyes to remember. “Life. The usual. The same. The love that wasn’t quite right, the dream that went sour, the sex that fell apart, the deaths that came swiftly to friends not deserving, the murder of someone or another, the insanity of someone close, the slow death of a mother, the abrupt suicide of a father—a stampede of elephants, an onslaught of disease. And nowhere, nowhere the right book for the right time to stuff in the crumbling wall of the breaking dam to hold back the deluge, give or take a metaphor, lose or find a simile. And by the far edge of thirty, and the near rim of thirty-one, I picked myself up, every bone broken, every centimeter of flesh abraded, bruised, or scarred. I looked in the mirror and found an old man lost behind the frightened face of a young man, saw a hatred there for everything and anything, you name, I’d damn it, and opened the pages of my fine library books and found what, what what!?”
Montag guesses. “The pages were empty?”

“Bull’s eye! Blank! Oh, the words were there, allright, but they ran over my eyes like hot oil, signifying nothings. Offering no help, no solace, no peace, no harbor, no true love, no bed, no light.”

Montag thinks back: “Thirty years ago . . . the final library burnings . . .”

“On target,” Beatty nods. “And having no job, and being a failed Romantic, or whatever in hell, I put in for Fireman First Class. First up the steps, first into the library, first in the burning furnace heart of his ever-blazing countrymen, douse me with kerosene, hand me my torch!”

Library e-books: How book publishers shoot themselves in the foot

There are a number of myths about digital books. One is that e-books help reduce library costs. Not true. In fact libraries receive specially inflated prices, most notably from publishers known as the Big Five.

As patrons most of us are in the dark about the extravagant costs libraries sustain to provide e-books for our education and/or reading pleasure. Publishers charge libraries much more for an e-book than what we pay as individuals. For a book you and I can buy on Amazon for $6.99, publishers may charge libraries an inflated price of $75.

The arrangement for e-book titles that publishers have with libraries is a convoluted ‘rent-a-book, but never own it’ model. More like a lease than a purchase, libraries are licensed to keep the e-book only for a limited number of checkouts determined by the publisher. One e-book per reader. No multiple or consecutive checkouts.

Rent, read, repeat.

Who else—besides librarians—would put up with this?

Publishers are in business to make—and should make—a profit. But so far large publishing companies seem to resent dealing with libraries; determined to penalize them with pricing models that come with too many strings attached.

It’s the library concept that corporate publishers don’t get. When businesses buy items to give away, it’s usually a promotional gadget. But library books are not a promotional giveaway intended to sell something more pricey. The bottom line for libraries is something you can’t put a price tag on.

Publishers’ myopically view libraries as the competition. Before Brian Napack stepped down as president of Macmillan, he said “the fear is that someone who gets a library card will ‘never have to buy a book again’”.

Meeting with a group of librarians swapping tales of e-lending woe, Phil Bradley, then president of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, made this bold statement: “In publishers’ eyes librarians are ‘sitting close to Satan’”. Source:Economist article, Folding Shelves 

Instead of over-inflated prices, restrictive licensing and unavailability of the latest best sellers, what if publishers adopted the concept of seeing the library’s ‘free’ e-books as a promotional tool that would eventually gain sales for them? An investment, rather than a loss of revenue.

Not only do public libraries struggle with these issues, college libraries also feel the heat from academic publishers. The Chronicle for Higher Education reports that college libraries recently received word of an outrageous increase of 300% in scholarly e-book pricing.

College libraries order academic books and journals on a short-term basis for a limited number of check-outs. E-books are triggered for full payment after as few as the third checkout. Each short-term loan is charged a percentage of the full price.

Susan Stearns, Executive Director of the Boston Library Consortium, states in a letter of protest titled, “Ebook Pricing Hikes Amount to Price-Gouging”. “These newly announced price increases, amounting to several hundred percent in some cases, are levied on short-term uses, and this regressive pricing model is being adopted by the publishers whose ebooks are already among the most expensive in the scholarly market.” 

While Ms. Stearns acknowledges that publishers need to ensure that they have a sustainable revenue stream…“this move looked like an experiment in predatory pricing, designed to make the most of rising demand, but without justification in terms of either production cost or use value.”

This business-to-library model is supposed to be Big Five publishers answer to Inter-library e-book loans, a forbidden transaction for libraries. So publishers let libraries ‘road test’ a book, but they maintain full control, collecting revenue with each checkout.

With print books publishers have no control over what happens after libraries purchase them because they own them completely. Inter-library loans—which date back to 1894 when a librarian at UC Berkeley implemented this system—must be a terrible thorn in a publisher’s side.

In the hard copy world, there’s no additional revenue stream when a book is checked out. With e-books publishers chip off a piece for themselves whenever the book changes hands.

In March 2014, the Oberlin Group, a consortium of 80 liberal-arts colleges, published a statement calling for an end to “restrictive licensing agreements” that prevent e-books from being shared among libraries the way hard copies pass through Interlibrary Loans. The statement, signed by Mr. Geffert and 65 other academic librarians, called the current model of e-book exchange an “existential threat” to the “ecosystem of sharing.” Source:College Libraries Push Back as Publishers Raise Some E-Book Prices

As they transition from print books to electronic delivery, college library e-book prices are inexplicably sky-rocketing.

From A gamble on e-book pricing, the author uses as an example, The World’s Major Languages, an expensive e-book title in the University of Denver’s library collection. “You can buy it on Amazon for under $75.00. But the university, who orders e-books on short term loans spent $69 for the three times it was check out by students. The fourth time there is a trigger which causes the library to purchase the title for an additional $345.00.”

It gets worse.

“…that was under a previous pricing model, in which the university paid 6.6 percent of the purchase price for each short-term loan. That number later jumped to 10 percent, and eventually, after the most recent revision, to 25 percent.”

Because of this latest price hike, Orbis Cascade Alliance, a collective of 37 libraries in the Pacific Northwest, will have to remove about 5,000 titles from its pool of 18,500 e-books in order to accommodate the changes.

Because college libraries have fixed budgets already in place for next year, many of them will be forced to remove e-book offerings. The bottom line for students is that they won’t have access to as many books next year.

As students and library patrons we are affected by publishers problematic business models in ways we may not notice. Because we often don’t notice what we can’t see. Until it’s too late. And that’s the real tragedy.

The hard questions:

  • Are publishers shooting themselves in the foot by making e-book titles ridiculously expensive for libraries?
  • Or worse: Are publishers relying on the trend to bookless libraries, especially in colleges and universities, knowing they have an increasingly captive audience?
  • And why are libraries still considering the bookless model?

Library clears bookshelves for coffee, couches, a culture of comfort

Coming to a library near you. If it hasn’t already happened, your library will be next. Increasingly library news is about offering students couches, coffee and a culture of comfort.

The trend is towards letting e-books do the heavy lifting, since librarians seemed to have developed a disdain for hard copy books. When the language librarians use to describe physical books contains the words ‘dusty’ and ‘lugging around heavy books’, you can be assured they’ll be disappearing from the shelves.

The latest library renovation, a red flag term for book purging, is taking place at Penn-Trafford High School in Harrison City, PA. According to a report by Matt Berlanger of WTAE News in Pittsburgh, the school library is purging 13,000 books in a high-tech overhaul.

Because a test-run of offering students more couches and armchairs and even a coffee bar that raises money for charity has been very successful at the school, they plan to incorporate those elements into the renovation of the library.

Really? Do students need more couches? What happened to P.E.??? And what about educating and challenging their minds instead of letting them sink into the sofa?

We have a Youth Section at our local public library. It’s glassed in so they are somewhat separate, but you can see the computer screens. Everyone of them is playing video games. I’ve yet to see anyone studying since they got their own space several years ago.

At Penn-Trafford High, the school principal, Scott Inglese, says the ‘makeover’ is part of a schoolwide trend of de-emphasizing hard-copy books, with students accessing books and other information online. “It’s going to be a whole new world in here,” said Paul Conrad, librarian at Penn-Trafford.

Their whole new world will only have 6,000 recently published and classic books. But they’ll have plenty of computers and places to charges their ‘devices’.

It’s tragic. We’re dumbing down the kids. Libraries are catering to a culture of comfort instead of creating curiosity about the world.  Meanwhile while there’s a silent scream from books being whisked off to the dust bins.

Growing trend: warehoused libraries

In spite of the fact that studies show students prefer print for serious academic reading, colleges and universities continue emptying the stacks, storing books off site, and moving towards bookless libraries.

In a Slate.com article titled “College libraries should keep their books in the stacks“, education columnist  addresses this alarming trend. 

The articles profiles Miller Library at Colby College in Maine which recently moved 170,000 of its books to storage, to make room for ‘sumptuous new administrative offices’. This transition is “but one example of a widespread move to re-appropriate library space in the age of digitization,” she said.

“There’s one wholly unsentimental reason the stacks are both vital and irreplaceable, and that brings us back to Colby’s decision to replace theirs with a gleaming shrine to the corporate bottom line. As more of the books disappear from college libraries, the people in charge of funding those libraries will be more tempted to co-opt that space for events that bring in revenue, or entice students for the wrong reasons: food courts. Gaming lounges. I expect rock-climbing walls soon. Unless administrators make a protracted effort to preserve the contemplative and studious feeling, that feeling will disappear altogether, and the whatever-brary will become just another Jamba Juice.”

What do Colby College students have to say about their new dumbed-down library? Sorry, your new library still sucks is the title of an editorial in The Colby Echo, student newspaper since 1877, and pretty much capsulizes strong student dislike.

“…the dismantling of Miller (library) is a liberal arts tragedy,” states Nick Merrill, editor. “Aside from the lack of faculty consultation, the most disquieting aspect of the timeline is how fast it transpires. There’s a reason why students and teachers are so jarred; we were given short notice and expected to quickly adapt. Over the course of this year, it’s become clear that students dislike Colby’s lack of administrative transparency. Like most recent instances of new policy, the library renovation came as a shock.”

The swift progression of the library’s extreme makeover, planned and carried out behind closed doors, echoes the story of library deconstruction in so many other colleges, as well as public libraries. Not only are the students unhappy, a group of 76 Colby faculty members have petitioned administrators to halt the renovation. In an open letter from the faculty concerning the Colby College library), they  paint an even grimmer picture of the outcome.

“Dear Members of the Colby Community: We the undersigned faculty, writing from all academic divisions, vigorously oppose the ongoing Miller library renovations at Colby.

The renovations have been hurried, poorly thought-out, damaging to the mission of the College and conducted with inadequate faculty input. Books have disappeared into storage, administrative offices have appeared or will arise where stacks of books once stood*, the reference area has been purged and the central floor looks like a massive waiting room, designed for students and other patrons to look at each other in between Google searches rather than engage in thoughtful contemplation and scholarship.”

Administrators obviously know their end game will not be well received or it wouldn’t need to be carried out like some covert operation. Students and patrons, the people who libraries are created for, have been betrayed by people who hold the public trust.

The browsing of physical books is an integral part of the library experience. This cannot be replaced by online browsing.

But what’s even more at stake here is that our historical records are at risk. Books need to be kept in public view, not warehoused in some remote location. The agenda being promoted is that the books will be better preserved in climate controlled buildings than on library shelves ‘gathering dust’. This ‘gathering of dust’ is a phrase I keep running across in veiled apologies for the clearing of stacks.

We need to demand accountability on the part of library administrators who have prioritized ‘sumptuous new administrative offices’ and social networking spaces over having real books available.

Books are made to be read! Why are they being buried?

Award winning libraries

Yiddish Book centerOne of the winners of this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service awards is The Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. The Center introduces students to modern Yiddish literature in an attempt to save the Yiddish language from disappearing. In the past 34 years, they’ve collected over a million books. The center’s founder and president, Aaron Lansky said,  “Our goal is to put old books in the hands of new readers, so we have distributed books to libraries across the world.”

“We literally pulled books out of garbage cans and off street corners.” In the past five years, the library has posted 12,000 books online that have been downloaded more than 100,000 times, Mr. Lansky said. “We’re pushing the envelope of what it means to be a library.”

Other award winners of the 2014 National Medal for Museum and Library Service are:

The annual awards are presented by the Institute of Museum and Library Service, the main source of federal support for the country’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.

First lady, Michelle Obama, will hand out the medals.
